Short answer
TikTok is worth it for businesses whose target customers are under 45 and whose products or process are visual. Create a business account, post 3 short videos per week for 30 days, and see if your audience is there before committing further.
Should your business be on TikTok?
TikTok works well for:
- Products that are visually interesting (food, crafts, fashion, home decor)
- Service businesses that can show transformations (cleaning, landscaping, renovation)
- Businesses targeting Gen Z or Millennials
- Personality-driven businesses where the owner is comfortable on camera
TikTok works less well for:
- B2B services with long sales cycles
- Businesses targeting customers 55+
- Services with nothing visually compelling to show
Setting up a business account
- Download TikTok and sign up with your business email
- Go to Settings → Manage Account → Switch to Business Account
- Choose your industry category
- Add your website, bio, and contact info
- Connect your Instagram if you want to cross-post
A Business account gives you access to analytics, contact buttons, and the ability to run ads.
What to post
Process videos — show how you do what you do. A mechanic filming an engine repair. A baker decorating a cake. A barber doing a fade. The process is the content.
Before/after reveals — wait until the final second to show the result. The suspense keeps people watching.
Educational tips — "Things your [profession] won't tell you." "3 mistakes homeowners make before calling a plumber." Useful content gets saved and shared.
Trending sounds — use trending audio from TikTok's sound library. The algorithm favours content using trending sounds.
The TikTok algorithm
Unlike Instagram (which largely shows you content from accounts you follow), TikTok's "For You Page" shows content based on what you've engaged with — regardless of follower count.
This means a brand-new account with 0 followers can get 100,000 views if the video resonates. The flip side: having many followers matters less here than on other platforms.
How to grow
Post consistently (3× per week minimum). Use 3–5 relevant hashtags. Reply to every comment in the first hour after posting — it signals engagement to the algorithm. Collaborate with other local businesses.
