Short answer

Go to business.google.com, click "Manage now," search for your business name, and follow the prompts. Google will mail a verification postcard to your address within 5 days.

Why it matters

When someone searches "coffee shop near me" or "electrician in [your city]," Google shows a map with 3 local listings before any websites. Those 3 spots come from Google Business Profiles. If you're not there, you're invisible.

It's completely free and takes about 15 minutes to set up.

Step-by-step setup

1. Go to business.google.com Sign in with a Google account you'll always have access to — ideally a business Gmail, not a personal one.

2. Search for your business Type your business name. If it already exists (someone may have created an unverified listing), claim it. If not, add it as a new business.

3. Choose your business type

  • Storefront (customers come to you)
  • Service area (you go to customers)
  • Both

4. Enter your details

  • Business name exactly as you want it displayed
  • Address (or service area if you're mobile)
  • Phone number
  • Website URL
  • Business hours

5. Verify your listing Google will send a postcard with a code to your business address. Enter the code when it arrives. Some accounts can verify by phone or email instead.

What to do after verification

  • Upload at least 5 photos (exterior, interior, team, products)
  • Write a description (250 words, include your city and main service)
  • Add your services or menu items
  • Turn on messaging so customers can text you

The review strategy

Your star rating appears on Google Search and Maps. After every successful job or sale, ask the customer directly: "Would you mind leaving us a Google review? Here's the link." A short text message with the link works best.
