Short answer
The most important local citation sites are Google Business Profile, Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Facebook, and YellowPages. Get on all six before worrying about anything else.
What is a local citation?
A citation is any mention of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) online. Google uses citations to verify that your business is legitimate and located where you claim.
The key rule: your NAP must be identical across all listings. Even minor differences ("St." vs "Street") can confuse Google's algorithm.
Tier 1 — Essential (do these first)
| Directory | Why it matters | |-----------|---------------| | Google Business Profile | Drives Google Maps and local pack results | | Bing Places | Microsoft's search engine — often overlooked, still sends traffic | | Apple Maps | Every iPhone user who searches locally | | Yelp | High domain authority; often ranks on page 1 for local queries | | Facebook Business Page | Treated as a citation by Google; also its own search engine | | YellowPages | Old but still indexed; Google counts it |
Tier 2 — Industry and local
After the essentials, find directories specific to your industry or city:
- Houzz — home improvement businesses
- Healthgrades / Zocdoc — healthcare providers
- TripAdvisor — restaurants, hotels, experiences
- Angi (formerly Angie's List) — home services
- Nextdoor — neighbourhood-level visibility
- Chamber of commerce website — local trust signal
How to manage them efficiently
Use a spreadsheet with columns: directory name, URL, login, listing URL, last updated. Update it whenever your address, phone, or hours change.
If you have many locations or want to manage everything in one place, tools like Yext or BrightLocal automate citation management for around $30–$50/month.
